The IATI promotes translation and interpreting studies trying to build the bridges between different bigger and smaller institutions and activities in the field of translation studies and to establish a scientific dialogue between people dealing with various fields of translation and interpreting research.

The IATI offers information on further education courses at universities around the world and also organises IATI’s own further education programmes like summer schools, special courses etc.

The IATI was founded as a CIUTI Academy e.V. in Saarbrücken on March 17th 2001, under CIUTI (Conférence Internationale Permanente d'Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes), the international umbrella organisation of all university departments of translation studies.

In Geneva on May 25th 2003 the members of the general meeting decided to dissociate the Academy from the CIUTI and to rename it as IATI - International Academy for Translation and Interpreting e.V. and also elected the IATI – Executive Board and its President.
